Morgan Freeman has undertaken his boldest role since the Shawshank Redemption as the charismatic spokesperson for James ‘lied under oath’ Clapper’s new organisation ‘Investigate Russia’.
If you haven’t had a chance to view the video, here it is. It contains a few absolute zingers, most notably when he claims that ‘for 241 years, our democracy has been a shining example to the world of what we can aspire to be’. This is Morgan Freeman, a black man, saying this, who as a child wouldn’t have been able to pee in a ‘whites only’ public toilet in his native Mississippi.
(I can’t embed the original video, presumably because they don’t want people mocking it, like I am currently doing. Here is a reupload from RT, just for the purposes of delicious irony)
In response, the Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov compared the video to McCarthyist era Hollywood propaganda.
As much as I hate to agree with the words of a Kremlin mouthpiece, Peskoy does have a point; this video is merely a continuation of a long history of Hollywood playing patsy to the whims of the US intelligence community. From the removal of references to military suicide in the blockbuster Iron Man, to the CIA’s uncredited production role in Zero Dark Thirty, military and intelligence cronies have always had a secret directorial chair in tinseltown.
In Katherine Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, the badass wonderwoman lead played by Jessica Chastain manages to waterboard her way to successfully locating Osama Bin Laden, suspiciously parroting the agency’s views on the necessity of ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ (more commonly known to civilians as torture). If you want to read further, VICE reported on it in detail.
Whereas Zero Dark Thirty was clearly a response to the US public not sharing the CIA’s enthusiasm for unpalatable human suffering in the wake of the Abu Ghraib scandal, the Freeman-commentated video is another attempt to reeducate the public – this time on the alleged importance of some Russians buying a few Facebook ads.
Doesn’t matter how much money the front organisation ‘Investigate Russia’ throw at it, though, the message still isn’t going through. Americans aren’t particularly concerned that the Russian GRU does bad things, because no matter how bad they are, they will probably never equal the destructive actions of their American equivalents.
If Freeman actually cared about agents eroding democracies both foreign and domestic, perhaps he could use his vote to curb the ever-expanding powers of the US deep state, rather than leading calls to nuke Russia back to the fucking Stone Age?
You can’t blame them for trying, though. Who better than Morgan Freeman – a man famous for portraying God – to induce the populace into a new Cold War? The only surprising aspect of the video is that a man who is ostensibly intelligent as Freeman is able to keep a straight face when accusing Russia of destabilising democracies. You know, like the US did in Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Chile or Libya?
I eagerly await a sequel.
